Guðný Guðmundsdóttir nasce in Islanda e inizia le lezioni di violino all’età di 6 anni. Dopo aver completato gli studi sotto la guida di Björn Ólafsson (al tempo concertmaster della Iceland Symphony Orchestra) continuò la sua formazione nelle Eastman School of Music e Juilliard School di New York.
Dal 1974 al 2010 le fu assegnato il posto di primo concertmaster della Iceland Symphony Orchestra. Per oltre quarantanni è stata un riferimento per gli allievi di violino di tutta l’Islanda come guida del dipartimento della Iceland Academy of the Arts, dove è Professore Onorario, in contemporanea alla cattedra nel Reykjavík College of Music.
Guðný ha eseguito concerti come solista in Islanda, Stati Uniti, Mexico, Cina, Svizzera, Norvegia, Hong Kong, Porto Rico e molti altri. Ha eseguito per la prima volta in Islanda alcuni dei maggiori brani per violino del 20° secolo fra cui composizioni di Stravinky, Elgar e Britten. Gudny è spesso chiamata ospite in festival e workshop nei Paesi Nordici, focalizzandosi sullo sviluppo di giovani talentuosi degli strumenti ad arco. Come insegnante, solista e musicista da camera, è stata invitata in numerosi festival negli USA e in Europa, inoltre ha insegnato in diverse università fra cui il Beijing Conservatory e la University of Houston.

The Icelandic born violinist Guðný Guðmundsdóttir began her violin lessons at the age of 6. After completing her High School in Iceland and studying violin with Björn Ólafsson, at the time the concertmaster of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra she studied at the Eastman School of Music and the Juilliard School in New York. From 1974 to 2010 she held the post of first concertmaster of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. For over four decades, she has been Iceland’s leading violin teacher and she now leads the violin department of the Iceland Academy of the Arts, where she is an Honorary Professor, as well as teaching at the Reykjavík College of Music.
Guðný has given recitals and appeared as a soloist in Iceland, the USA, Mexico, China, Switzerland, Norway, Hong Kong and Puerto Rico amongst others. In Iceland, she premiered in Iceland some of the major 20th century violin concertos including Stravinsky, Elgar and Britten. Gudny is a frequent guest at festivals and workshops in the Nordic countries, focusing on the development of young talented string players. As teacher, soloist and chamber musician, she has been invited to numerous festivals in the US and in Europe and has taught at universities including Beijing Conservatory and the University of Houston, Texas.
Guðný has received various awards in recognition of her services to music, including the Icelandic Order of the Falcon in 1989 and the DV Culture Award in 1990. Last spring she was awarded the highest honour from the Icelandic Composers Union for her contribution to Icelandic music.
